project vs product

Project vs product

is your organization project/services focused, or is it product focused? is your team aligned? what’s the difference?

if you celebrate shipping on time, completing milestones, and hitting deadlines, you might be in a project focused team.

if you celebrate user adoption, nps scores, and measurable impact, you might be in a product focused team.

if teams are temporarily assembled, work against a mostly pre-determined scope for a fixed amount of time, and then disband, you might be in a project focused organization.

if teams are mostly permanent, own outcomes over years, and focus on long-term value creation, you might be in a product focused organization.

if success is measured by staying within budget, scope, or utilization targets, you might be in a project focused organization.

if success is measured by net new revenue, lower cycle time, better uptime, or stronger retention, you might be in a product focused organization.

if leadership is asking, “did we deliver what we said we would?”, you might be in a project focused organization.

if leadership is asking, “did we make life better for our customers?”, you might be in a product focused organization.

if you get promoted for upselling additional services, you might be in a project focused organization.

if you get promoted for being innovative, you might be in a product focused organization.

in a project focused org, the roadmap is a promise.

in a product focused org, the roadmap is a hypothesis.

make sure you know which one you’re in. the danger isn’t being in one or the other. it’s thinking you’re in one when you’re actually in the other. because that’s when you start wondering why the work you’re proud of doesn’t seem to matter.
